Blackmagic Design has been on a bit of a spending spree recently. With growing success throughout the film industry in the worlds of film production technology and post, the brand is now positioning itself as one of the most important players in the game, extending its reach into areas of the industry where it previously hadn't had a presence. The main way that Blackmagic has done this has been the acquisition of other brands. However, rather than simply buying up companies to increase market share, Blackmagic has been taking the products that it purchases and improving them.
Blackmagic Design's spending spree
A lot of film technology companies buy competitors to strengthen their grip on the industry, but Blackmagic Design has continually demonstrated its willingness to inject money into its acquisitions and improve the product. The most high-profile example of this has been the purchase of DaVinci Resolve, now a flagship element of Blackmagic's offering. Not only has huge investment been poured into the production software, but Blackmagic has also introduced a free version. This is far from an anomaly, with the company taking a similar approach with every new brand it purchases.
Blackmagic Design has continually demonstrated its willingness to inject money into its acquisitions and improve the product.
"The same has been true with most of their other acquisitions, like the FX platform Fusion, the cross conversion Teranex hardware line, and even Cintel, where they upgraded the film scanner for the modern era (thunderbolt!) in a move that they must have known had a very, very small market," explains No Film School.
The most recent batch of Blackmagic acquisitions came in September 2016 at the annual IBC event, where a series of big purchases were announced. The most high-profile of these was Fairlight Audio, which we've spoken about in-depth on this blog, and which has since been integrated into the latest version of DaVinci Resolve. Just as important, however, was the announcement that Blackmagic had also bought Ultimatte, an innovate and world-renowned company specialising in chroma keying.
Ultimatte, our Oscar®-winning live green screen compositing solution, was the most popular demonstration at our Broadcast Asia 2017 booth. Learn more about Ultimatte at https://www.ultimatte.com #BlackmagicDesign #Ultimatte #Greenscreen #BroadcastAsia2017

Blackmagic Ultimatte: Advanced chroma keying
Chroma keying is the process used to composite images together using a coloured background – typically a green screen. Ultimatte's speciality is real-time image keying, which is obviously incredibly useful in situations such as live news weather reports. However, with VFX software becoming more advanced seemingly by the minute, the process is now being used in all sorts of different environments, necessitating high-quality keying options at affordable prices, as explained by No Film School:
"A live key is a great tool for ensuring that your lighting on set is properly matched to the elements you are planning on keying against, and is also useful for creating roughly keyed dailies to enable editorial to start working on an edit with a rough key already in place that was overseen by the DOP, director and client on set. However, most indie live key tools haven't been particularly powerful or sophisticated, and [we] look forward to seeing the Blackmagic magic in play here with lower price point options and integration with the rest of the Blackmagic suite sure to come."
It's still early days as to what exactly Blackmagic does with the Ultimatte product line, but if the results are anywhere near as exciting as what the company has done with its previous purchases, we're all in for a treat. To find out more about Blackmagic Design and Ultimatte, contact DVT today.
