One topic that we've returned to time and again here on the DVT blog is the future of broadcasting, and how new technologies are making online video streaming the norm. In fact, live streaming has quickly grown from a niche service into an enormous industry, one that is predicted by recent MarketsandMarkets research to grow to a value of US$7.5 billion by 2021.
With so much change taking place within the world of live streaming, and at an incredibly fast pace, it's difficult for brands to truly stand out with their video production and broadcasting products. One company that is managing to rise above the rest is Blackmagic Design, which in 2017 announced a slew of new devices that work together to create what is effectively a mobile TV studio for high quality streaming.
Blackmagic Design: Live production and broadcast
Blackmagic's announcement came at the 2017 National Association of Broadcasters (NAD) trade show in February 2017. In a seminar that was, of course, live streamed, the company launched three new products, all of which can be used either separate or as together at various points during the live broadcasting of video. These products were:
The Blackmagic Design Web Presenter was perhaps the most important of these releases, allowing for the quick and easy streaming of a wide variety of different video signals, from SD to Ultra HD. It works by converting the input signal to something very similar to a standard USB webcam. This is a format recognised by almost every major streaming program, including the most popular formats such as Twitch, Facebook Live and YouTube.
The conversion to 720p also means that streaming is fast, without any loss of quality. As Blackmagic's press release at the time explained, streaming in 720p provides the quality of HD as well as a 16:9 aspect ratio, but without the high data rates that would make transmission via the internet difficult.
The Web Presenter can also be used for live switching, with the ability to cut between two different inputs with the addition of an optional Teranex Mini Smart Panel. In this configuration, the Web Presenter operates as a mobile studio in its own right – taking footage from multiple cameras and turning them into a high-quality broadcast.
The beauty of the Blackmagic Design Web Presenter is its versatility.
Who is it for?
The beauty of the Blackmagic Design Web Presenter is its versatility. The unit is equally at home in smaller environments such as live streaming a church service as it is during large-scale conferences or seminars. Regardless of how many people might be viewing a stream that the Web Presenter puts out over the internet, users can rest easy knowing that their footage looks as good as it did when captured by the camera, and is being delivered to the relevant streaming platform quickly and without interruptions.
In all of the situations where the Web Presenter can be used, it solves a problem that has baffled live streamers for the last few years, namely, whether they should go with too much, or too little. Streaming directly from a smartphone is by far the simplest option, but the quality of the video and audio signals is often lacking. At the other end of the spectrum, full broadcast setups offer high quality, but are expensive and difficult to master.
Blackmagic Web Presenter makes any professional SDI and HDMI video source appear as a 720p HD USB webcam for streaming high quality video to millions of viewers over the internet. The Web Presenter, which clocks in at a very reasonable AU$655, means that it's possible to use existing cameras such as a DSLR and simply stream that signal, eliminating the problems with both of the previous options and offering a complete solution.
In addition, the low price of the Web Presenter makes it possible to re-budget for other aspects of broadcast that have lagged behind in live streaming. For example, lighting, set design and better microphones can all make an enormous difference to how a live streamed show looks, but too often have been left to one side while the kinks with video have been ironed out. Now, with solutions like those from Blackmagic, we will start to see live streams that truly rival television in terms of production quality, taking the industry one step closer to domination by internet video.
